As Ensemble Studios considered what to do next in its venerable Age of Empires series, the development team looked to another genre, role-playing games, for inspiration. Age of Empires III lets players accumulate experience points that they use to customize their Home Cities, which deliver crucial shipments of units and resources when the game is hanging in the balance.
